Organic French Lentils are dried, whole legumes that are incredibly versatile and delicious! Like pasta, French lentils can be cooked in a pot of boiling, salted water, and for approximately 30 minutes (tender with a slight bite), or until desired texture. French lentils are earthy and nutty in flavor, while tender in texture. Cooked French lentils can be used as an alternative to meat in recipes; they can also be used as an addition to salads and soups. French lentils blend or mash easily to add texture, thickness, and depth to recipes as well!
HEALTH BENEFITS: A HEART-HEALTHY ADDITION!
Lentils are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and iron!. High in soluble fiber, lentils as part of a dietary staple may help to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and stabilize blood sugar levels.
CULINARY TWIST: BEYOND SOUP!
Classically, lentils can be used in soups, salads, curries, and delicious side dishes. French lentils can also be used in unique ways to create vegetarian meals. Lentils are small in size which mimics the texture of ground meat. Use this comparison in recipes, such as shepherd’s pie, meatloaf (mash or grind lentils for this application), meat balls, Bolognese-style tomato sauce, stuffing’s, etc. Lentils are incredibly diverse legumes that soak up flavors and pair well with a wide variety of ingredients; in addition, lentils can be served both warm and cold, making them incredibly versatile!
ABOUT LENTILS: DID YOU KNOW?
Unlike beans, lentils do not need to be soaked since they tenderize easily in boiling water. Though rare, tiny pebbles can be found in a batch of dry lentils. It is always best to lay lentils out onto a large plate and sift through the batch quickly.
